UTM Parameter

UTM parameters (Urchin Tracking Module) are query parameters appended to URLs to identify traffic sources in analytics tools like Google Analytics. Three are required: utm_source (origin), utm_medium (medium), and utm_campaign (campaign name). utm_term and utm_content are optional.

In QR code marketing, UTM parameters are essential for measurement. Adding ?utm_source=flyer&utm_medium=qr&utm_campaign=spring2026 to a flyer's QR code URL enables precise tracking of visits, time on site, and conversions from that specific flyer. Different UTM parameters on different media enable cost-effectiveness comparison.

The caveat is URL length. UTM parameters can expand URLs to 100-200 characters, increasing QR code size. Solutions include URL shorteners or dynamic QR codes that store a short URL and redirect to the UTM-tagged destination.
