Digital Menu
A digital menu is an electronic menu viewed on a smartphone screen instead of a paper menu book. When you scan the QR code placed on the table, the menu appears in the browser. It spread rapidly after the COVID-19 pandemic raised the demand for contactless service, and it has now become a standard option in the restaurant industry.
The advantages of digital menus are wide-ranging. They include lower printing costs (no need to reprint every time the menu changes), real-time updates (instantly hiding sold-out items, adding daily specials), multi-language support (serving inbound tourists with a language switch button), photos and videos (rich content that is difficult on paper), and filtering by allergy information (hiding the relevant menu items).
As a more advanced form, there are mobile order systems in which everything from the digital menu through to ordering / payment is completed directly. The whole flow of scanning the QR code, browsing the menu, selecting items, adding them to the cart, paying, and the start of cooking is completed on the smartphone, with no need to call a staff member. For a restaurant industry struggling with labor shortages, it is a trump card for operational efficiency.
