Store Scan Method

The store scan method is a QR code payment approach where customers display a QR code (barcode) in their payment app, and the store's register terminal reads it to process payment.

Primarily used at convenience stores and supermarkets with register terminals. Since the store side reads the code, payment amount entry errors are less likely and processing is fast. The counterpart is the "user scan method (MPM)" where customers scan the store's QR code.

Adoption requires a merchant contract with a payment provider or payment service aggregator and a device that reads the code on the customer's screen. Stores already using a POS register with a barcode scanner can sometimes enable reading with a settings change or an added software module, keeping the initial cost below that of installing a separate terminal. With POS integration, the amount confirmed at the register becomes the payment request and the result is recorded as sales data, so closing the register and reconciling daily totals need no manual cross-checking. This suits businesses where the sale is settled at the register, such as convenience stores, supermarkets, drugstores and restaurant chains. Mobile vendors and event stalls without register equipment are better served by having customers read a displayed QR code.
