QR code traceability records and tracks distribution by scanning QR codes at each stage of production, processing, distribution, and sales. Consumers scanning product QR codes can verify origin, producer, processing date, and distribution route.

In the food industry, it is used in some cases to counter origin fraud and to identify causes during food poisoning incidents. Data accumulated from scanning at each stage allows retrospective investigation of what happened at which stage when problems occur.
