Barcode Reader
A barcode reader (barcode scanner) is a dedicated device for optically reading barcodes and QR codes. Three types exist: laser (1D only, high speed), CCD (1D and 2D, LED-based), and imager (camera-based, best for QR codes). While smartphones can scan QR codes, dedicated readers excel in speed, accuracy, and durability for business use.
Modern imager-type readers decode dozens of times per second, handling high-speed sorting on warehouse conveyor belts. Laser readers are fast but limited to 1D barcodes. CCD readers handle both 1D and 2D codes.
Business-grade readers cost $70-700, featuring dust/water resistance (IP54+), drop tolerance (1.5m+), and long battery life for harsh environments. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity integrates with POS and inventory systems wirelessly. The choice between smartphones and dedicated readers depends on scan frequency and business requirements.
