In 1994, Denso engineer Masahiro Hara drew inspiration from the black and white stones on a Go board during lunch breaks. The 19×19 grid with 361 intersections holding black or white stones is structurally identical to QR code module arrays. Obsession with Reading Through Grime

Hara's top priority was reliable scanning in harsh factory environments with oil, metal dust, heat, and vibration. Reed-Solomon error correction recovering up to 30% damage became QR codes' signature feature, with parameters tuned through repeated factory floor observations. The three-corner finder patterns enabling instant angle-independent detection achieved reading speeds roughly 10 times faster than barcodes.

The Strategic Decision to Release Patents Royalty-Free

In 1999, Denso Wave released QR code patents royalty-free while competing 2D codes (PDF417, Data Matrix, MaxiCode) charged license fees. This made QR codes the only freely usable 2D code, dramatically lowering adoption barriers. The short-term revenue sacrifice ultimately established QR codes as the global standard and expanded Denso Wave's reader and software market.

Western 'Rediscovery' and COVID-19

QR codes were widely used in Japan from the 2000s but dismissed as 'dead' in the West during the early 2010s. Apple's iOS 11 (2017) adding native camera scanning removed the app-installation barrier. COVID-19 in 2020 made QR codes essential for contactless menus, vaccine certificates, and health checks, completely reversing the 'QR codes are dead' narrative.

The Inventor on QR Codes' Future

Hara received the European Inventor Award's Popular Prize in 2014. He has expressed surprise at uses he never imagined: payments, healthcare, education, entertainment, space exploration. 'Technology evolves beyond its creator's intent,' he says.
