Whitespace

Whitespace is the empty area in a design where no elements are placed. It is an important element that prevents cramming in too much information and achieves both visibility and beauty.

In QR codes, whitespace refers to the surrounding margin called the quiet zone. ISO/IEC 18004 specifies that a margin of at least 4 modules must be secured on all four sides of a QR code. Without this margin, the scanner cannot correctly detect the boundary of the QR code, and reading errors occur.

The most common failure in practice is a designer trimming away the margin around the QR code. If you squeeze the QR code right up to the edge to save space on a business card or flyer, adjacent text or images encroach on the quiet zone and scanning accuracy drops. You should secure a margin of at least 4 modules around a QR code, and 8 if possible.
