Inverse QR Code

An inverse QR code is a QR code drawn with "white or light-colored modules on a dark background" instead of the usual "black modules on a white background." It looks as if the negative and positive have been reversed.

Under the ISO/IEC 18004 standard, a QR code expresses information through the contrast between "dark modules" and "light modules," so it does not matter which is dark and which is light. In theory, an inverse QR code can also be read as a legitimate QR code. In fact, the standard camera apps of the latest iOS and Android correctly recognize inverse QR codes.

However, in old scanners and some third-party reader apps, the finder pattern detection logic is implemented on the assumption that "dark squares are on a white background," so they may not be able to recognize inverse QR codes. If you place importance on compatibility across a wide range of devices, the usual black-on-white design is the safe choice.

Inverse QR codes are effective when you want a QR code to blend into a design with a dark background, such as a web page in dark mode, black product packaging, or a poster in dark tones. Use them while keeping the design consistent, after testing in advance that they can be read on the major smartphones.
