Inventory Management

Inventory management is the process of accurately tracking product quantities, conditions, and storage locations. While traditional barcodes were the standard, QR codes now store multiple data points (part number, lot, manufacture date, location) in a single code, significantly improving accuracy and efficiency.

A typical QR-based workflow attaches labels at receiving, then scans at shelving, picking, and shipping to update status. Unlike 1D barcodes limited to roughly 20 digits, QR codes store thousands of characters, enabling offline operation in environments without network connectivity.

Cost is another QR code advantage. RFID tags cost several cents each, while QR labels printed on standard printers cost under one cent. For warehouses managing tens of thousands of items, this difference amounts to millions of yen annually. However, QR codes require individual scanning unlike RFID's bulk reading capability, making RFID preferable for large-scale stocktaking.
