Beacon
A beacon is a small device that periodically broadcasts Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) signals. Running on coin batteries for years, it sends location signals to smartphones within a range of tens of meters. Beacons enable indoor positioning where GPS cannot reach - shopping mall floor guides, museum exhibit explanations, and airport gate directions.
Beacons and QR codes appear to compete but actually complement each other. Beacons deliver information automatically when users approach, but require a dedicated app. QR codes need only a camera but require active scanning.
Combined designs are most effective. A shopping mall entrance QR code launches the facility app, then beacons automatically push floor information and coupons as visitors move through the space. QR codes serve as the initial touchpoint; beacons provide ongoing engagement.
Beacons cost several thousand yen per unit plus battery replacement overhead. QR codes require only a printed sticker. Small shops and temporary events often need only QR codes; large facilities offering continuous location-based services justify beacon investment.
