A version 40 QR code is 177 modules per side, or 185 modules including the 4-module quiet zone. At error correction M it holds up to 3,391 alphanumeric characters or 2,331 bytes.

The byte row counts bytes. Japanese or Chinese text in UTF-8 takes 3 bytes per character. The kanji row counts characters encoded in kanji mode (Shift_JIS). This site's generator encodes text in byte mode (UTF-8), so treat the kanji row as the limit set by the standard.
