QR Codes Around the World - How Usage Differs by Country

China - The QR Code Payment Leader

China has the world's most widespread QR code payment adoption. WeChat Pay and Alipay are deeply embedded in daily life, with nearly all monetary transactions from street vendor payments to rent transfers conducted via QR codes.

While Japan sees cash and QR payments coexisting, stores in Chinese cities that don't accept cash are not uncommon. The technology has penetrated every corner of society.

India - QR Code Payments as National Policy

India's government-led unified payment infrastructure UPI (Unified Payments Interface) has driven rapid QR code payment growth. Apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm support UPI, enabling QR payments even at small street stalls.

The 2016 demonetization accelerated cashless adoption, bringing mobile payments to populations without bank accounts. QR codes serve as a tool for financial inclusion.

The West - Rapid Adoption During COVID-19

QR code adoption in the West lagged behind Japan and Asia until COVID-19 changed everything. Contactless needs drove QR code adoption for restaurant menus, event tickets, and vaccination certificates, quickly embedding them in daily life.

For payments, NFC-based Apple Pay and Google Pay dominate, with QR code payments far less common than in Asia. QR codes primarily serve as "information access tools" in the West, a key difference from Asia.

Africa - Merging with Mobile Money

In Africa, where banking infrastructure is underdeveloped, mobile money (like M-Pesa) is widespread, and QR codes serve as one payment method. USSD codes for feature phones and QR codes for smartphones coexist.

In agriculture, QR codes on seed and fertilizer packages give farmers access to cultivation methods and usage information. In areas with low literacy rates, delivering information via video through QR codes is particularly effective.

Japan - Diverse Usage in the Country of Origin

As QR codes' country of origin, Japan uses them far beyond payments: eL-QR tax payments, My Number card integration, disaster safety confirmation, and temple offerings. They permeate government, culture, and daily life.

However, QR code payment market share isn't as dominant as in China or India, coexisting with cash, credit cards, and transit IC cards. Being "one of many options" characterizes Japan's approach.
